Presentations | Check Lists | Visits | Speaking Fees
As well as being both an author
and an illustrator, I am also a teacher. This career
combination enables me to share a complete perspective into
the creation of books in a manner that is age appropriate for
a variety of audiences. Although I create books for young
children, I have found the process of writing and illustrating
picture books to be of interest to all levels of learners. I
have had the pleasure of sharing my publishing experiences
with students from kindergarten right on through high school.
A day long visit to your school
can include up to four presentations. In a typical session, I
explain how I turn the tiny seed of an idea into a book from
writing and editing, to storyboards, reference photos, book
dummies and a great deal of perseverance.
I bring along many items to
share including manuscript revisions, sketches, book dummies,
finished original art, as well as samples from the various
stages of the printing process from proofs to galleys.

The following guidelines will help in making the day run smoothly.
-
Because I bring along a lot of
material to share, it is best that I set up and stay in one
location rather than traveling from room to room.
-
Each session should be 45-50
minutes in length (30 minutes for Kindergarten). Please
allow 10 minutes or so in between each session.
-
I prefer smaller groups (60
students or less). It is important that everyone be close
enough to hear me and see my materials easily.
-
Each presentation is age
appropriate, so it is best to group students at, or near
grade level if combinations are necessary.
-
I will be happy to autograph
books at the end of the day. Please make sure each book has
the recipient's name clearly spelled out. Post-it notes work
well for this.
